The City of Monticello and the Mayor’s Advisory Council for the ADA Is proud to once again support Disability Awareness Month and plans are well underway.  

As always the City of Monticello is committed to being an accessible, responsive, community that welcomes and includes everyone. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has become a useful tool in assuring that access changes are made and policies are developed to give people with all kinds of disabilities an equal opportunity to participate and benefit from community programs and activities.

Listed below are our initial Schedule of Events.  All times are EST (Indianapolis/GMT -5)
  • Wednesday January 11th:  Banner Art Contest Projects are turned into City Hall for judging.
  • Wednesday, January 18th: The Art Projects are judged in the West Bay at new City Hall
  • Wednesday, March 1:  Art and Banner displays go up on Main Street
  • March 1-16th:  Art will be on display at the Monticello Library during open hours.
  • March 20-31:  Art will be on display at West Bay Area at City Hall, 120 W. Washington St. 
  • Tuesday, March 7:  10:00am Awareness Month Story Hour-Monticello-Union Township Public Library- Celebrity Reader
  • Thursday, March 9:  5:00pm Wheel Chair Basketball & Social Services Fair at Twin Lakes High School Auxiliary Gym - Door 9 on west side of building from side parking lot
    • 5:00-7:00pm - Social Services and Transition Fair
    • 6:00pm - Lafayette Spinners Wheelchair Basketball Demonstration
    • 6:20pm - City Department Tournament and Annual Guns Vs. Hoses
    • 6:40pm - Monticello Combined Game—Red vs. White
    • 7:00pm - Aktion Club members recognized
    • 7:10pm - Half-time Activities.  Please visit our concession stand and social services booths
    • 7:20pm - City Department Tournament Championship
  • Wednesday, March 15:  6:00pm Story Hour at Monticello-Union Township Public Library - Celebrity Reader
  • Thursday, March 16: Walk a Mile In My Shoes Day at the White Oak Health Campus - Dementia Experience.  Call White Oaks Health Care to schedule an appointment.
  • Wednesday, March 22:  3:30pm Story Hour at Monticello-Union Township Public Library - Celebrity Reader
  • Thursday, March 23:  5:30pm Arts & Awards Reception at City Hall, West Bays 120 W Washington Street

Monon Station Expansion Work & Support Honored

Certificates of Appreciation were given out to many individuals, groups, and businesses for their hard work and support to make the Monon Station expansion a success. Pictured above with the Mayor are MFD FF/Paramedic Jacob Norwell, Monon Town Marshall & Township Advisory Board member Roger Young, and Lon Roudebush of Professional Interiors.

Below is the list of all that were awarded certificates for their help and support.
  • North White Building Trades for the renovation that turned an upstairs storage area into living quarters with living room, kitchen, bath, laundry area, and two bedrooms
  • Lon & Judy Roudebush of Professional Interiors provided and installed non-slip material on the staircase. This was provided at a reduced cost and they rearranged their installation schedule to make sure the work was done before the station opened.
  • Brad & Shari Moore of Ace Hardware provided all the paint and supplies at a substantial discount
  • Mark Reynolds of the Monon Connection Museum at the Whistle Stop Restaurant provided Monon Railroad memorabilia to decorate both the living quarters and the meeting room. The upstairs was painted to match the color scheme of the 1950s era Monon Railroad passenger train.
  • Jasper County Recovery House for providing paint crews.
  • Roger Young, Monon Town Marshal and Monon Township Board for hours of work on cleaning and preparation to turn the space into living quarters.
  • Lt. John Huff, Monticello Fire Department for installing new sink and faucet in the kitchen
  • Firefighter Paramedics Ryan Hahn and Jake Norwell for cleaning, furnishing and preparation work.

City Honors Nicholas A. Brietic Foundation

The City of Monticello awarded the family of Nick Brietic with a certificate of appreciation.  The mission of the Nicholas A Brletic Foundation is to honor and continue Nick's legacy. A beloved, son, brother, and friend, Nick lived life to the fullest and brought joy to the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Nick's love of all water and boating led to the foundation donating $7500 to the Monticello Fire Department Rescue Boat fund.

Lake Shafer Association Awarded by City

The City of Monticello hereby expresses its gratitude to the Lake Shafer Association for decades of support for the Fire Department Water Rescue Team. The relationship between the City of Monticello and the Association was born of tragedy. Henry Warinecz drowned in Lake Shafer on May 18, 1983. Divers from the Fire department recovered his body.

Henry's daughter, Ruth Bortscheller, who was affectionately known as Mrs. B. was the secretary treasurer of the Lake Shafer Association. She knew the importance of the Water Rescue team and helped in raising tens of thousands of dollars for the Team over the last 40 years. The money not only purchased hardware such as boats, motors, and diving equipment, it also paid to train Fire Department Divers. Divers are trained in advanced skills like Emergency Response Diving, ice diving, dry suit and full-face mask diving. The latest contribution from the Association was a sonar unit for the department's new boat. Sonar allows the victim of a drowning to be located much more quickly than possible by traditional underwater search patterns.

The Lake Shafer Association's contribution to public safety has afforded the Monticello Fire Department to have a water rescue team that is better equipped and better trained than would have been possible without their support. The City of Monticello is extremely thankful for this on-going public – private relationship with the Lake Shafer Association that continues to enhance the safety of our community.

IHCDA select Monticello for My Community, My Vision Initiative

On December 6, 2022 Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch and the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority have chosen the Monticello Next Generation Youth Advocates for the My Community, My Vision (MCMV) program, which connects high school students across Indiana to each other and their neighborhoods, towns, and cities.   Review more information about this initiative here:

Monticello Lighted Christmas Parade December 3rd

The Rotary Club of Monticello & the Streets of Monticello Association announces the Annual Monticello Lighted Christmas Parade.  The Parade will be held on Saturday, December 3rd at 6:00PM.  Join us for the fun and excitement of the Monticello Lighted Christmas Parade!

Also, plan on making your business, church, club or organization a part of the parade. ( Click for Registration Form )

The parade route will begin at Ohio Street and Third Street. It will proceed east on Ohio Street to Main Street and continue north. The parade will end at Foster Street.

Parade Information
  • Registration/Drop-Off will begin at 4:00PM at the Meadowlawn Elementary School parking lot, at the South Street Entrance. *Ohio Street will be closed.
  • Entries must be in-line for the parade by 5:30PM
  • Each entry will receive an “Entry #” to be displayed on the front, left side of your leading vehicle.
  • Numbers will be collected when entries pass by the Judges Review Stand
  • Judging will take place during the parade.
  • Prizes will be given to the top 7-entries:
    • 1st Prize
    • 2nd Prize
    • 3rd Prize
    • Spectacular Sparkles
    • Most Creative
    • Judges Pick
    • Mayor’s Choice Award
  • Deadline to submit your entry is Wednesday, November 30, 2022.
Rules
  • For safety reasons, NO THROWING of candy or other objects from moving vehicles will be allowed.
  • All candy or objects must be HANDED to spectators from a walking volunteer.
  • Santa Claus will have a place of honor at the end of the parade. NO other persons dressed as Santa or Santa figurines will be allowed.
  • All vehicles must be decorated and display lights. *Headlights should be turned off.
  • All walkers need to have battery-powered lights on them and stay with their floats.
  • All animals/livestock entries MUST provide their own clean-up crew AND be on a leash
  • Participants are responsible for cleaning-up any litter in the school parking lot.
  • The Parade Committee reserves the right to reject any entry.
  • Absolutely no unloading on any street.  Unloading must take place in either the parking lot between the High School and the Roosevelt Middle School OR the Meadowlawn Elementary School parking lot.

Don't forget to winterize your rain barrel before freezing temperatures arrive.

  • Disconnect the diverter from your downspouts.
  • Drain the water out of your barrel.
  • After it drains just leave the spigot open.
  • Plug the diverter connected to your downspouts.
